Back Pain: Finding Natural Relief With Acupuncture

If you've never experienced back pain, you're in the minority. Statistics show, 4 out of 5 people in the U.S. will seek medical help for back pain in their lifetime. Maintaining a healthy back is important, but finding quality care, if you have an injury, can be equally important. Used for thousands of years, acupuncture and Chinese medicine is a safe and natural approach to treating acute and chronic back pain.

There are many different reasons why a patient may be experiencing back pain, therefore, in Chinese medicine we treat them all differently. Some of the reasons a patient may experience pain are fibromyalgia, herniated discs, arthritis, pulled muscles, piriformis syndrome, sciatica, stenosis, scoliosis, spondylolisthesis and many more. While some of these are caused by trauma, others are auto-immune conditions or structural problems caused by bad posture or repeatedly performing activities that are not ergonomically correct.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), back pain is separated into a few different diagnosis. The most common of these are Qi and Blood stagnation, KI Yin Deficiency and obstruction due to Cold and Dampness. These are just general diagnosis and usually there are overlapping conditions and a root cause that lead up to the sensation of pain. Pain is usually the last symptom to show up and the first symptom to disappear when the back starts to heal. It's important to keep following through on treatments even though the pain is gone. Your health care provider will want to make sure your back is structurally sound before they release you. There's nothing more frustrating than continually relapsing from a health problem.

Acupuncture is effective in treating acute pain related to trauma. The needles have a sedating effect on the muscles, encourage the body to release endorphins (your body's natural pain-killer) and activate the immune response, signaling more white blood cells to go to the affected area.

Chronic back pain can also be treated with acupuncture. Not only is acupuncture effective in breaking down scar tissue, but also to ease myofascial pain, relax tight muscles, reactivate muscles that aren't firing properly and increase blood flow to the area.

Acupuncture is more than pain relief. It can truly heal a patient and help them to regain the life they once had. There are many things we still don't know about acupuncture, but it's a safe and effective treatment for many conditions and has very few side effects. If you're tired of taking medications and want to try a natural approach to health care, try acupuncture and see just how good you can feel.
