It is ill advised to slow down socialization with the growing age of any dog as it will definitely help ensure a long and enjoyable life with all dachshund puppies.

Many top dog trainers will advise you of the age old belief that training dachshund puppies should begin as early as possible. Dogs by nature are willing and fast learners and should live to please their owners. Remember, you are the alpha and they live for your approval. Having a well trained dachshund who is responsive to your commands on a reliable and replicable basis means true learning has occurred. There is a large variation among dachshund puppies in this country and abroad that will be sure to produce a great variation in training time.

The first step in responsible training is to approach your new puppy as a canine. Remember that it is not a small furry human as canines have a slightly different social view of the world that will need to considered as you enter your relationship. Through selective breeding, dog tendency to closely bond with its pack has extended to include people. Another selection has been toward showing either a very neutral reaction to a very powerful desire not to harm members of their own social pack. Dachshunds actually have strong desire to protect their pack members from both animal and human attacks.

It is very exciting when you finally get to pick up your new pup. Training should begin right away and that includes crate training. Crate training has proven to be a comfortable choice for dachshunds and their owners. You will want to have that crate along with you in the car when you pick up your dachshund. On the trip back home it is smart to stop frequently, up to every 30 minutes, to let your new puppy relieve itself. By nature, dogs do not like to 'dirty' their home or den. This is behavior that you certainly want to encourage. As soon as your dachshund puppies relieve themselves out doors you should immediately praise this action. When house training your new puppy, praise is all that is needed and most experts warn against the use of treats or food.

When house training your dachshund puppies, it is expected to take them outside to 'potty' as soon as they wake up in the morning or from any naps. Be sure to be consistent in your use of 'potty' or what ever commend you are going to use. You want to make sure that each of your dachshund puppies training commands are short and precise. This allows you to quickly communicate and praise and will aid in your puppy quickly learning the association. Always follow up this phrase with praise when the new puppy complies. This will aid in the dog quickly relieving it self when you are on the road or staying in a motel.

Working with your dachshund puppies on a lead is a comfort that you want them to learn very early. This includes using a lead when you are first house training your puppy. Keep the lead loose and take the dog for a short walk after puppy has finished. Getting dachshund puppies comfortable with a leash is very important to establish early on.

Many different expert dog trainers will agree on the first five areas of training that you want to instill into your new puppy. These lessons will lay a solid foundation for the continued training work to come. You want your dachshund puppy to be comfortable walking on lead, come when called, sit, retrieve and be socialized.

Dachshund puppies can provide years of enjoyment for their owner and families. The stronger the relationship that you develop early on with your new puppy will make training easy as you progress. Remember that all dogs learn at a different pace and the training time may differ from previous dachshund puppies you have handled.
